Personnaly, I don't agree about what you say on last days sitewide links, as it is what we (the Sphere team) did until the end: getting as much links as possible, mainly sitewide links, and it paid. Some of the team members had the same concern than you (avoiding being filtered due to too many links in a short period of time) and we had a hard time convincing all the members to follow our heavy linking strategy, and I'm pretty sure that eventually, it is what made the difference .
