No Tsunami Alert

Details Here: http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2009/08/03/932240/01/message932240-01.htm

I’m based in San Diego and so far in our location, the shake was strong especially in downtown San Diego buildings, but all of us our safe and I hope most people are especially those near the epicenter.

I really think earthquake detection technology should really be super sophisticated especially in coastal areas and urban areas where many damages can occur. Cal Orey was one of the people known to detect earthquakes well before they happen. His book explains many techniques in earthquake prediction and is cheap, with less than $13 bucks, that extra knowledge can save lives.

If you want to go hightech and learn more about plate tectonics and more, also a bit more pricey at $284, get the Fundamentals of Earthquake Prediction
by Cinna Lomnitz. Extra knowledge can save lives.

Cli.gs Hacked?!? http://www.seocontest2008.com/cli-gs-hacked.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/cli-gs-hacked.html#comments Wed, 17 Jun 2009 17:42:48 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.sulumitsretsambewblog.com/?p=76 My Cli.gs account hacked!

Wow, all my old forwarding URLs starting Dec 12, 2008 and older are going to:

lansner.freedomblogging.com/2009/06/14/twitter-hashtag-conversations/25613/

And the names were changes to:

Hashtag? How to join those Twitter

Since I have a lot of cli.gs post, I never really would have noticed this unless I went back to some older cli.gs. Good thing Ann told me about hers and she said she got hacked. I checked mine and the same thing also. Hacked cligs!

Will WolframAlpha Crash Later or Amaze Us Beyond Google? http://www.seocontest2008.com/will-wolframalpha-crash-later-or-amaze-us-beyond-google.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/will-wolframalpha-crash-later-or-amaze-us-beyond-google.html#comments Fri, 15 May 2009 19:56:21 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.sulumitsretsambewblog.com/?p=69 Will WolframAlpha Crash Later or Amaze Us Beyond Google?

Yes! After I have been waiting for this launch, my fingers are shaking, trembling, and I can’t wait to use them when I get a hold of WolframAlpha and let’s see if it pushes G out of it’s spot as the one of the top search engines. For a long time, my typing fingers has always sought after the G spot since it gives more relevant information than Yahoo and MSN/Live.

If you are not familiar with WolframAlpha, check this out.

Just so much power, I feel I am facing StarTrek Technology, talking to a computer giving me pertinent answers.

If WolframAlpha and Google were Helicopters

WolframAlpha would be Airwolf and you are Stringfellow Hawk.

Google would be BlueThunder which was also cool but all it’s power was just that Gatlin Gun.

If WolframAlpha and Google were Motorcycles

WolframAlpha would be StreetHawk and you are Jesse Mark.

Google is just The Dirt Bike Kid, yup it was just for kids.

If WolframAlpha and Google were Cars

WolframAlpha would be the original Trans Am Knight Rider’s KITT and you are Michael Knight.

Google would be the new Mustang Knight Rider, KITT. Come ‘on nobody is going to be cooler than the Hoff!

If WolframAlpha and Google were Ships

Google would be StarBlazers

But WolframAlpha would be way bigger transforming into a robot! That’s Macross!

If WolframAlpha and Google were transforming robot airplanes

WolframAlpha will run on Starscream technology.

Google will just be that Gobot with that cheezy face underneath the plane.

Now the question is… will it really be super cool later? Or will be just see a bunch of 404s, 503s, 500s, 302s… let’s see. WolframAlpha launches today as a webcast!

Disabling Twitter Updates http://www.seocontest2008.com/disabling-twitter-updates.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/disabling-twitter-updates.html#comments Thu, 19 Mar 2009 07:20:21 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.sulumitsretsambewblog.com/?p=54 I decided to test for some time the plugin Twitter Tools. Aside from posting on twitter your latest blog post, it also post on your blog your latest tweets! First impression it is cool, actually it really is. Problem was I tweet more often than I blog. So blog-to-twitter never happened, and twitter flooded my blog with conversations I believe most people would not care about. In fact I plan on deleting all my old post on this blog which were forwarded from twitter and just use Objection Redirection to fix things up with the 404s.

Strategy Difference in the SEO World Championship and UK Webmaster World’s SEO Contest http://www.seocontest2008.com/strategy-difference-in-the-seo-world-championship-and-uk-webmaster-worlds-seo-contest.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/strategy-difference-in-the-seo-world-championship-and-uk-webmaster-worlds-seo-contest.html#comments Mon, 24 Mar 2008 08:55:38 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.seocontest2008.com/strategy-difference-in-the-seo-world-championship-and-uk-webmaster-worlds-seo-contest.html I joined the SEO World Championship by Get Updated last year. This so called annual SEO contest that started in January 15, 2007 and I was waiting for this annual event in 2008 which just did not seem to come. With my best effort to look for the next best SEO Contest, I ended up joining UK Webmaster World’s SEO Contest.

I won the SEO World Championship and won my SEO contest car, but for the UK Webmaster World contest, we still don’t know yet who really wins. This contest ends on April 1 and as much as I try to maintain my lead, I know Paul Sanches and Martin Svilenov, current number 2 and number 3 respectively are not stopping in trying to get the top spot.

But even if I won the SEO World Championship, my whole SEO strategy was completely different in these two contest.

SEO World Championship, keyword: GlobalWarming Awareness2007

My main SEO weapon here was relevant content. Well researched content that was all 100% unique. All a product of my own writing which I did not seem to have a hard time to write being a science major (my first profession was being a Chemist). The formula was simple:

  1. Come up with good viral link baitable content.
  2. Use as much forms of social media I can to promote the content further.
  3. Gain link naturally from people that discovery the site.

One of the most successful post was: 5 Good Arguments Why GlobalWarming is NOT due to Man-made Carbon Dioxide. I made a point that what I say was well researched and did my best to show both sides of the story and try not to be one-sided. Try to make it controversial and make it inviting to comment on to get more user interaction. It got 159 Diggs and got some science bloggers and global warming political bloggers to react and comment on, talk about and link to. Some positively, some hated me. Love or hate, the fact that these existed, meant the blog post was effective in getting the attention of people and having people link to it. Having MyBlogLog and looking for Global Warming bloggers helped in getting more target audience and placing all RSS feed reader chicklet links made it more inviting to bookmark.

Although I have used several other techniques, I believe this was the main strength I had to win the contest. I got relevant blogs linking to me mainly because of the content even without soliciting links.

UK Webmaster World’s SEO Contest keyword: SEOContest2008

Applying the same technique I did with GlobalWarming Awareness2008 was not exactly applicable here. Given the keyword, SEOContest2008, I needed to talk about SEO and Contest and try to get links from SEO blogs. That would be hard since one of the most hardest links you can get from link baiting alone is from SEO sites unless you really really have something good to talk about. Which I have attempted to do with the W3C valid code not important in SEO post that still worked as if hit front page of Sphinn and several Diggs when the blog post came out. But it would still be hard to come up with topics like this on a regular basis. So I did a different technique where I invested my initial time in the design of the site. I will quote a friend from SEO Philippines, Abel Quitoriano said this: Design pa lang, link bait na! In English he meant: The design alone is already a link bait! This strategy is not an original one. I must admit this is a copied strategy from Jason Torres, another friend of mine from SEO Philippines after seeing his performance in another previous SEO contest. His design was so popular it was featured on many sites, even in blog post saying the best designed sites of 2006, so thanks to Jason for the idea.

This contest is not over yet and we still don’t know who is going to win. Good luck to all competitors!

W3C Code Validation is NOT Important in Search Engine Ranking http://www.seocontest2008.com/w3c-code-validation-is-not-important-in-search-engine-ranking.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/w3c-code-validation-is-not-important-in-search-engine-ranking.html#comments Tue, 18 Mar 2008 09:00:36 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.seocontest2008.com/w3c-code-validation-is-not-important-in-search-engine-ranking.html I have heard this over and over by various bloggers and present day SEO experts. Although many oldschool SEO practitioners have a strong affinity in the belief that W3C validating, compliant HTML or XHTML and CSS helps a lot in the ranking algorithm. Now is there any truth to this?

The premise behind the belief that valid XHTML helps in search engine ranking

Every webpage is written in the base language HTML. And this language is interpreted by web browsers. How it should be interpreted are based on rules set by the World Wide Web Consortium or W3C. Web browser makers should create browsers that follow these rules so a webpage is displayed properly.

Search engine spiders reads the content of webpages and should extract the contents of a page. Since search engines will read the code as well, then it should make sense that your site follows the code standards to make sure search engines read the code well to avoid any errors in the interpretation of the site code and the content.

Based on observation, is valid XHTML code important in SEO?

Based on personal experience, my answer would be no. I have seen many sites ranking so high with tons of validation errors. And also I have seen many sites no errors, and you get the green bar on W3C’s validation service and yet they are not ranking anywhere. If ever there is any benefit, it is not a major one and can be influenced by other factors. Although there are also other people stating that they see better ranking with valid code.

And when Vanessa Fox used to still work for Google’s Sitemap Team, in an interview with SEOMoz‘ Rand Fishkin for WebProNews, Vanessa clarified that the code is simply separate from the content right away.

But I still like W3C Valid Code

Just because there is no real benefit, I still like W3C valid code. For me it is like an addiction. I love to see the green bar on my XHTML Validation and CSS Validation. Having the green bar makes sure you are following all the rules correctly and web browsers are required to follow these rules. This makes your designs more scalable and future-proof for the years to come.

And by the way, there is still some hidden SEO benefit in valid code. But I can’t tell you because if I do, then it is no longer hidden. :) Go figure.

SEOContest2008 SEO Secret! http://www.seocontest2008.com/seocontest2008-seo-secret.html http://www.seocontest2008.com/seocontest2008-seo-secret.html#comments Mon, 17 Mar 2008 04:43:26 +0000 Sulumits Retsambew http://www.seocontest2008.com/seocontest2008-seo-secret.html As I am seeing more and more efforts by competitors like seocontest2008-sphere.com making more blog post by creating more Blogger accounts for more links from blogspot.com domains and seocontest.uk.com now using PPC which I am sure they probably know that PPC does not help organic ranking directly, but can generate traffic and hopefully invite more link bait possibilities as they both work on their last 15 day streak to get the number 1 spot on Google.com for SEOContest2008. These efforts give me jitters that prompts me to do my moves as well to maintain my position and hopefully does not make me come off my current ranking. Thus I decided to revive my top SEOContest2008 secret weapon! (shhhh, don’t tell anyone, it is a secret!)

My bad singing might do the SEOContest2008 a trick!

People trying to hack and go straight to the database by injecting MySQL code. But it does not seem to work on my blog. Maybe older versions of Wordpress are more vulnerable to this attack? Could this be related to the number of SEOContest2008 hacking attempts that have been going on mentioned by the other competitors? I believe not since I have been getting this also on my other blogs.
